There are many different ways to present an idea to a client. Interior designers have to learn a range of presentation skills because different approaches are needed at each step in the design process.
In this unit you will learn how to:
- Discuss how interior designers present their work by exploring historical and contemporary examples.
- Find out what a client needs and collect information to develop a presentation package for presenting designs.
- Use different presentation methods and choose which ones to add to a presentation package.
- Use a presentation package to present finished designs to a client.
Assignment 1:
Understanding the presentation methods (also called communication techniques) that interior designers use is an important first step for developing your skills.
Task 1
‘R thing Presentation Methods’
In this task, you will research how presentation methods used in interior design have changed over time. You will research examples from the past and in the present.
1. Choose at least four presentation methods from the list below:
- Rendered perspective drawings
- Floorplans
- Elevations
- Sections
- Sample boards
- Sketches
- Sketchbooks
- Detail drawings
- Collages
- Concept boards
2. Find historical (before 1980) and contemporary (after 1980) examples of your chosen presentation methods. To do your research, use:
- Books
- Magazines
- Websites
- Journals
- Any other resources where you can find examples of interior design presentations
3 For each presentation method you research, compare a historical designer and a contemporary designer. Include the following information:
- The name of the presentation method and the year it was created
- An example of a historical designer who used the presentation method. Your example should include:
- The name of the designer
- An image of the presentation method that was made by the designer
- A description of the method being used

Think carefully about how you arrange the images and text in your table or visual diary
- Think about how the images you choose impact on what you are trying to say
- Use the Harvard Referencing Method for citing and referencing
- Save all your work in a PDF tile.

Task 2 ‘
Creating a Collage’
In this task, you will create a collage to examine how the presentation methods you researched in task 1 present a design idea.
1. Select four Images from task1. The images you choose should include a mix of historical and contemporary examples of presentation methods.
2. Create a collage using these images.
3. Write notes beside each Image in your collage discussing how each designer presented their design. Use the research you completed in task 1 to discuss how each image presents a design idea.
Tips:
- Your collage should be neat, tidy and easy for a client to understand. When adding notes, it should be clear which ones relate to each image.
- You can create your collage digitally or physically using an A3 mount board.
- II you create a physical collage, take a scan or photograph of it and save the role as a PDF.
- Make sure you can see all images and text clearly.
