The average American psyche in this day and age is depressed; I offer as proof of this contention the fact that “Among all Americans, the suicide rate increased by 33 percent between 1999 and 2017” (Siegel, 2020). I would like you to diagnose in an essay why it is that Americans are depressed. Here are a few possible explanations. Choose whichever ONE that you think the best explanation (some of these can be combined such as cyberbullying and smartphones but before you attempt any sort of combination be sure there is a STRONG tie between the topics):
• Overbearing parenting
• Smartphones
• Undiagnosed Lyme disease
• Suicide being contagious
• Loneliness
• Access to guns
• Bad government
• Weather changes
• Methamphetamines
• Wealth disparity between rich and poor
• Americans having high expectations (so if we do not meet them, we feel depressed)
• Mass-automatization of employment
• Outsourcing of manufacturing jobs
• Loss of religious belief
• Climate change and the fact that the governments of the world are not doing enough to counter it
• Cyberbullying
• Drug addiction (opioid crisis; Sackler family)
• Increasing poverty
• Disengagement from other people due to COVID restrictions
• Social media replacing true human connections with unfulfilling virtual ones
