This assignment has two parts. First, explore one of Sei Shonagon’s lists of “things” in The Pillow Book (#22, #39, #40, #68, #71, #104, #144, #257), thinking particularly about how the list is constructed, and why it is constructed that way. In a brief essay, answer the following questions.
1. What does the author gain by beginning her listing with a particular item? What is the value in ending it the way she does?
2. What does the author do to vary the tedium of the list-form? Is it primarily through varying her syntax (sentence structure) as she moves from item to item? A variety of sensory images? What else?
3. Is there a perceptible pattern to the order of the list as she “follows the brush” from one item to the next? If there is such a pattern, what is it, and what does the author gain from using that pattern? If not, why not, and what does the author gain from not using a pattern?
Once you have sketched a rough draft of your essay, imitate and update the list you have chosen to write about. Choose the same topic for your list (e.g., Insects), but then update the list as you go along, imitating the sentence structure and feel of The Pillow Book as best you can, but updating it to your personal, local circumstances, your “Dispiriting Things” or “Insects” or whatever (e.g., The cockroach. The ladybug. Ants.). If you have chosen one of the longer lists to explore, limit yourself to imitating about 12-16 lines of text.
(Once you’ve completed your imitation, you should feel free to revise your essay in light of what you’ve learned from that exercise.)
(FOR THIS PROMPT I CHOSE #144 AND UPLOADED THE PAGES IN THE MATERIALS)
