Moya Bailey’s (2021) Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women’s Digital Resistance Book Review
Moya Bailey, author of Misogynoir Transformed: Black Women’s Digital Resistance, is an associate professor of communication studies at Northwestern University. She is an African-American feminist scholar and attended Spelman College and Emory University, where she has developed her knowledge of women, gender and sexuality to a high level. She said that she has been studying and working on women’s rights since before, and she became more famous when she coined the word “Misogynoir”, which is her theme in this book. She didn’t know that the concept would spread around the world quickly, but the word spread quickly on cultural and social issues. Also, she wrote this book on the basis of her more knowledge and real-world experience in relation to what she had gone through as a black woman. By writing this book, she came to be treated with great importance as the social problems of black women came to the world more and more.

This book is different from other ordinary books. Moya, an associate professor at the university, introduced new concepts and books to the world, but unlike ordinary books, he is not bound by conventions or restricted. That’s why this book is still getting a lot of attention and it’s a very interesting read. She has written a book that supports the position of black women with evidence and experiences, as she expands her arguments in this book. These evidences and the claims she expressed come to people more and more innovatively. Bailey’s purpose through this book is not to attract ordinary audiences, but to bring to the surface the problems of black women who are not receiving attention or being treated properly and to express them in the media.
This author showed how trans activists are using social media for their communities. In addition, by giving examples of real people, it was used more reliable and immersive. Bailey gives an example in Chapter 2 of a man named Janet Mock, the trans woman who created the hashtag ‘#GirlsLikeUs’. This hashtag was created in support of Jenna Talackova, a trans woman who competed in a beauty pageant. Trans, who participated in the competition, was on the verge of being eliminated by using this hashtag, but was able to enter the final candidate thanks to the support of many people. When you look at this example, you can see just how powerful social media hashtags are. What’s even greater here is the power of trans women. Of course, not all of his supporters are trans, but trans women can create hashtags so they can’t stand absurdity in one person. Bailey also took this example to demonstrate the power of black women using social media to demand their own rationalization and equality and to express their opinions fully.
However, her outspoken expressions cannot be favorable to everyone. Of course, her thoughts should not be ignored, and I cannot refute her claims because they are their own opinions and arguments, but not everyone can believe her thoughts and act. The human rights issue of black women has been an ongoing issue for a long time. There are fewer cases of discrimination and unreasonable treatment today than before, but people may still have prejudices or stereotypes, and they may have their own circumstances. Personally, I learned about the seriousness of these problems that there is misogynoir about black women through her expressions and people’s experiences. Also, I think it’s very clear that black women’s groups are trying to change their perceptions with their own efforts. Not everyone will believe in misogynoir, but I think the world should change, not black women, so that these words don’t exist.
Bailey examines how black women braved misogyny through social media in a number of valiant and most importantly effective ways at a time when black women were portrayed as uglier, defective and unhealthy than white women. .
