Question 1
An aircraft manufacturer is designing a new narrow-body twin-engine passenger aircraft with 168 seats. The main equipment to be included in the aircraft are as follows:
a) Design a suitable electrical system architecture for this new aircraft. Your electrical system architecture must include generators, batteries, APU, RAT, busses and emergency electrical components. You will need to recommend off-the shelf equipment that can be used in your proposed system (recommendations should include supplier/manufacturer and equipment specs).
(35 marks)
b) The operation of your electrical systems during normal operations and how your system can handle aircraft emergencies. (25 marks)
c) Discuss which bus (example AC1, AC2, AC ESS SHED BUS, AC ESS BUS) should each of the equipment in the above equipment list be connected to and the rationale for your choice.
(20 marks)
d) The aircraft manufacturer intends to provide its customers with a spreadsheet which can assist the customer in conducting electrical load analysis. You are to design such a spreadsheet (preferably with macros for automation). Your spreadsheet must include all the power sources and all loads (categorised according to buses such as but not limited to AC1, AC2, AC ESS SHED BUS, AC ESS BUS). Your spreadsheet should be able to compute the loading for both normal and emergency operations, the electrical capacity used for each power source and the remaining capacity. It should also alert the user when the loading exceeds the supply. (You can use your own figures for demonstration in your spreadsheet). An example of possible output is shown below for your reference (you need not follow this).
