HIED 5365 – Academic Affairs in Higher Education Summer 2020
Create your own College or University
Assignment Due Date: Sunday, August 2nd, 11:59.00 pm (CST)
Total Points Possible: 100
Introduction:
For this creative exercise, please explore and describe your ideal college or university. You are free to select which type of institution, i.e. private, public, 4‐year, 2‐year, technical. The primary purpose of this project is to gain a greater awareness and appreciation of how various units work together to meet the institution’s mission. You will create the mission. You will make decisions regarding size, setting, enrollment, curricular and extra‐curricular details, etc.
Instructions:
For this paper, please reflect on the readings from our textbook. Imagine yourself in a situation where you are the chair of the Board of Trustees or the college/university president, or the Provost/CAO. What is the mission of your institution? How are you and each of the functional units within your institution operating? What is your organizational chart? What are your challenges? How are you working well together? How would the local, state, or federal government support or aid your institution?
You are not limited to these questions in your paper. Dig into your thoughts and experiences, both as a professional and as a student! Imagine that you will need to provide this report to the college/university president and/or the Board of Trustees describing your institution and your strategic plans for the future. How would you share your thoughts concisely and how would you explain them to that person/governing board (and your peers)? Or, how would you prepare a report for your accrediting body to describe your institution and how you are living out your institutional mission?
Guidelines:
• Explore the readings in our text and supplemental materials to construct and support your own positions and ideas on the above items, in addition to your own personal thoughts and experiences. If you site the textbook or an article, be sure to do so using APA format. Which of the Bolman and Deal frames are prevalent at your institution and within the academic infrastructure or units?
• Submit a paper with your responses. It should be between 5 (minimum) – 10 (maximum) pages. There is not a preferred format other than 12-point font Times New Roman. You can establish your own style and headings.
• Have fun creating your ideal institution and feel free to elaborate on as many details as you want to set the stage for describing your institution and how it functions (and dysfunctions).
• You may want to research various college and university websites to get started. Check out their “About Us” or “Quick Facts” to help you paint the context for your institution (number of students, number of majors, student demographics etc.)
• You could also begin by creating an organizational chart for your institution to make sure that you describe all constituencies.
