Context
Stacking up magnetic tiles indoors on the
artificial turf

Observation
Marie grabbed a basket of colourful magnetic tiles of varying shapes from the shelves. At first, she picked
a triangle-shaped tile randomly from the basket, then she started to collect all the triangle-shaped tiles.
She found two types of triangle-shaped tiles, turned, and said to me “This is a big triangle, and this is
small.” Subsequently, she went on to stack the small triangle shape tiles one upon another. She did this
for a long time, each time making sure the size and the sides of each triangle matched with the existing
stack. She did the same with the big triangle-shaped tiles. Having used up all triangle shaped tiles in the
basket, she tossed through the basket and landed with a tile of a different shape- a square tile and she
declared, “I am building a tower.”

Analysis of Learning
Marie was developing understanding of shapes and was able to correctly identify the names of different
shapes. She was developing fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination skills of manipulating the tiles
to ensure they all stack up. She was expressi
ng her ideas and creativity through interaction and
communication.

What next?
I will follow up Marie’s interest in shapes and colours with a sorting experience. I will
provide Marie with a coloured sheet of paper containing the outlines of different shapes and provide
her with different coloured shapes using the magnetic tiles.
