Part II: Background Research
For this portion of your Final Field Trip Project you will have a definite plan of where you are going for your field trip, and you will provide background geologic research conducted for the area/locations of your three stops. An example is what you might find at the start of a tour guide book that describes the general geology one would encounter when visiting particular sites.
Your paper will be in the form of a single document ranging from 1 to 3 pages, with in-text citations and an APA reference section. In your research you want to include, based on the maps you found of where your stops will be, what geologic features you will/may encounter. You can also include your research conducted online of what you will find. Note that when you go on the actual field trip you will see and report on the actual features you see and discover. This initial research is meant to prepare you for what you could encounter.
The following should be included with helpful headings of each portion:
Your name and date at the top of your page.
Based on the feedback from your instructor, you will include your original, or if it needed to be edited, Initial Proposal at the top of your research content. (If you did not complete Part I, then this must be created or points will be lost.)
For the area or each of the individual stops, you will summarize and report on (make sure to label each, or note if it is for the overall area you will visit):
Report about the soil; minerals and rocks; mineral resources; depositional environments; structural geology (folds, faults, joints); plate tectonic associated features such as mountains and volcanoes you will encounter. What kind of rocks or minerals might you see? What specific features will be visible?
Has an Earthquake ever occurred in the surrounding areas that would impact your location? What about volcanism?
At this point in the semester, we may have not covered all of the above aspects, but look ahead in our text and modules for what you might include.
Include the date or general date you anticipate conducting your trip.
You may include pictures from your sources, and or your geologic maps. But your real photos will come when you actually visit the stops.
Include an APA reference section for your in-text citations.
