Assignment number and title 1
Assignment type Group Report
Weighting of assignment 40 %
Size or length of assessment 2500 Word maximum limit for individual submissions
Unit learning outcomes Demonstrate the following knowledge and understanding: Identify, evaluate and analyse steam systems, cooling cycles and their applications into various thermal machineries.

Demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
Perform analysis and evaluation of various thermal systems and implement optimisation of performance for those thermal systems.

What am I required to do in this assignment?
Students will be divided into groups of 3. Work with your colleagues in the group and then produce word-processed documents and oral presentation detailing the work that you have done. If there is a dispute within the group, you should inform the lecturer or unit coordinator, so that a meeting with the group can be held in the first or second weeks of the assignment where the matter can be resolved.

Instructions Your group has been given an initial compression ratio to design an internal combustion engine-based heat and power generation system. The system will comprise of an internal combustion engine, a heat recovery system. You are required to calculate the total heat and power that can be generated with this system and calculate the daily fuel requirement based on a 16-hour 50 % operation.

The groups are to use the following compression ratios and individual members are to use the swept volumes given:

Tasks
Do a study on various heat and power generation technologies. [10 %]
Size your engine based on the above information. Bear in mind that the engine will run at a fixed RPM as it will be used for power generation. [30 %]
Detail the operating parameters of the engine. [10 %]
Design the heat recovery system that will fit this engine and calculate the amount of heat that you can recover. [20 %]
Consider whether you can use the recovered heat to run another bottoming cycle power generation device. [20 %]
Summaries your system and write and predict how your system will behave over a period of time. You are required to calculate the CO2 produced and the heat and power generated. [10 %]

Deliverables and Method of Delivery
From each group:
Both a group member list and what each group member’s contribution is. This needs to be submitted to the unit coordinator by the group leader by Week 6 (latest 10:00am, 04.11.2022).
You are required to produce an individual report of 2500 word max detailing your design. You are required to upload your report on BREO (under Assignment 1).

What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)
Demonstrate understanding of the concepts and their relevance to engineering.
How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?
You will be marked only on the work submitted in the word-processed report. Your individual mark will be influenced by your own work, your contribution to the group area on BREO and progress feedback.
How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
The tasks in this assignment are relating what you are learning in the whole unit.
