Choose a case and examine it ethically. In your examination, you must describe the case and give the background of your case, state and defend your position, present the opposition, and demonstrate why your position is the stronger one.
In this course you will write up to 3 case studies, short essays about actual cases in bioethics. Each case study must be no shorter than 750 words and no longer than 1,500 words in length (about 3 double-spaced pages). Case studies must be based on an example of a moral dilemma faced in a particular clinical encounter. In your case studies you will analyze in detail the moral implications of the case and argue for a strategy to resolve the moral issues in the case. You will be graded on the rigor with which you apply bioethical theory to the dilemma at hand. You can use actual cases, but unless the names of those involved in the case have been used in the news media, please protect the confidentiality of anyone involved by using pseudonyms (e.g., “John Smith”) and changing any other identifying information. There are no rewrites or late papers accepted except in cases that meet the “Late or Missed Work Statement” below. Your final grade will only include the two best grades from the three case studies.
