Assignment Brief
Assessment Overview
The assessment for this module are designed to test specific aspects of students’ learning. They are mapped to the Module Learning Outcomes as shown in the table below.
Learning Outcome Assessment
LO1 Critically evaluate how innovation and technology management could be contextualised to apply in the institutional environment
LO2 Conceptualise and assess the process of how to lead and manage technology and innovation
LO3 Analyse critically different types of technology and innovation management, as well as their determinants
LO4 Critically assess the implications of different technology and innovation strategies to determine the likelihood of success
LO5 Develop a conceptual framework for tackling the opportunities and challenges in technology management and innovation
The assessments comprise THREE tasks (AS1, AS2 & AS3):
- AS1: In-class group poster presentation of 10 minutes with a 5-minute question and answer slot;
- AS2: Individual reflective report of 1,000 words based on the group poster, to ensure that every student participates in the group work; and
- AS3: Individual essay of 2000 words to assess students’ understanding and application of the core concept
Assessment Tasks
Each of the three assessment tasks provides opportunities to assess your knowledge, competence, and performance in innovation and technology management. Refer to Section 1 for a summary of the assessment specifications and how the assessments map onto the learning outcomes. Note that an assessment is meant to be a snapshot of what you know, and not “everything” that you know. So, be selective, be strategic and showcase your best work.
Assessment 1 (AS1) task
This assessment task is designed to address the following learning outcomes:
LO2: Conceptualise and assess the process of how to lead and manage technology and innovation;
LO5: Develop a conceptual framework for tackling the opportunities and challenges in technology management and innovation.
This is a group work and it carries 20% of the final mark. You will have to work with your peers in the group to which you have been assigned. There will be NO opportunity to change your group. Each group is self-directed; you are free to choose a group leader and/or assign roles within your group. However, every group member is expected to actively participate.
2.1.1 The task
ONE of the following companies will be assigned to your group:
Your poster will be presented in the class during the Week 5 seminars. Each group presentation will last 10 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of feedback/Q&A. You will be graded in accordance with the pre-defined rubric.
2.2 Assessment 2 (AS2) task
All written work MUST use the assessment template provided on LearningZone (Assessment Brief & Preparation > Assessment Preparation > Assessment Template).
This assessment task is designed to address the following learning outcomes:
LO1: Critically evaluate how innovation and technology management could be contextualised to apply in the institutional environment
LO3: Analyse critically different types of technology and innovation management, as well as their determinants
This is an individual task and it carries 30% of the final mark. It involves critical reflection and evidence-based analysis. This means that you should contextualise and critically analyse arguments made within your work by making reference to credible sources. Consider a credible source to be an academic article, an academic book or other written work that has been peer-reviewed or fact-checked. The Resource List within this module lists a large number of credible sources. You will find many more in your Learning Materials, especially the lecture slides. You can access these in the university library. For support with critical reading and writing, how to approach literature reviews, Harvard referencing, and other academic skills please visit Centre for learning and Study Support (CLaSS).
2.2.1 The task
- Start by reflecting on your learnings and personal experience while you were working on the first assessment task.
- Based on this reflection, you are required to write a reflective report on your experience completing assessment one (AS1)
- Your report MUST include in an appendix your group poster from assessment one.
- The word limit of the essay is 1000 words. This word limit EXCLUDES title page, table of contents, tables, figures, reference list and appendices. A deviation of +/- 10% is allowed. There will be a penalty (deduction of 10% of the mark) for work exceeding the word limit beyond the allowed deviation
