Wk 5 Summative Assessment: Health Equity Pollution and Illness in Maligned Communities Infographic and Executive Summary

Assignment Instructions

Imagine you work for an organization that advises government agencies about hazardous environmental exposures in maligned communities. The current project on your desk is to help inform the county health board of a specific illness tied to air or water pollution exposures. In fact, you have been asked to present your findings to the directors of the county health board in a couple of weeks.

Choose a specific illness caused by air or water of compromised quality in maligned communities/populations. Keep in mind Hill’s criteria of causation as you conduct this research.

Identify at least 2 journal articles that support the causation between the exposure and the illness you selected. In your research, consider the impact on environmental and occupation health.

Create an infographic that presents the findings from your research on your chosen illness. Use any media element to best represent your findings and analysis (examples include videos, pictures, graphs, images, and presentations). Infographics can be prepared on applications like Microsoft PowerPoint, Miro, Mural, and Canva.  MOST students submit their infographic on a Word document.

*Please remember that an infographic is not just text. Word includes features such as SmartArt, shapes, icons, charts, tables, and WordArt that can help you design a visually engaging and easy-to-read layout. Be sure your submission looks like an infographic—not an essay.

Write a 275- to 350-word executive summary that includes the following:

        • Analyze the social justice and health equity issue(s) in relationship to the air or water pollution exposure.
        • Recommend actions to be taken to remediate the problem and support the maligned community. Support your recommendation with information found in the textbook and the journal articles you identified in your research.

Cite your sources according to APA guidelines.

Submit your written assignment as a Word document. Most students submit the infographic and summary separately. That is your choice.

Step 1: Understand the assignment goals

  • You need to connect a specific illness (from air or water pollution) with environmental and occupational health impacts.

  • Show this connection visually with an infographic and in writing with an executive summary.

Step 2: Pick your illness and exposure

  • Choose an illness that is clearly linked to pollution in maligned communities (e.g., asthma from poor air quality, lead poisoning from contaminated water, or gastrointestinal illness from unsafe water).

  • Make sure it’s something you can find credible journal articles about.

Step 3: Research with Hill’s criteria in mind

  • Use Hill’s criteria (strength, consistency, plausibility, etc.) to see if the evidence shows a cause-and-effect relationship.

  • Find at least 2 peer-reviewed journal articles from reliable databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, or your school library).

Step 4: Create your infographic

  • Use tools like Canva, PowerPoint, or Miro.

  • Keep it visual: use graphs, charts, icons, or images to summarize your illness, causes, and impacts.

  • Organize it logically: exposure → illness → social/health equity issues → solutions.

Step 5: Write the executive summary (275–350 words)
Include:

  1. Introduction: Briefly state the illness and the related pollution exposure.

  2. Equity & Justice Issues: Explain how this issue impacts maligned communities unfairly.

  3. Recommendations: Suggest practical solutions backed by your textbook and articles (e.g., stricter regulations, community interventions, clean-up programs).

  4. Conclusion: Reinforce why addressing this illness is essential for public health.

Step 6: Format in APA style

  • Use APA in-text citations for your journal articles and textbook.

  • Add a proper reference list at the end of your executive summary.

Step 7: Submit

  • Infographic (Word/Canva/PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Executive summary (Word, APA formatted)
