Module Title : Academic Skills and Professional Practice
Assessment Brief:
This assessment is designed to encourage the development of essential academic and professional skills that underpin success at the postgraduate level and within the broader context of professional practice. It seeks to foster critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and reflective abilities by engaging students in structured self-assessment, research-informed decision-making, and professional development planning. Through the completion of this portfolio, students will enhance their ability to interpret academic assessments, synthesise knowledge from diverse sources, and apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.
Additionally, this assessment aims to cultivate effective communication skills, ethical academic practice, and self-regulated learning, ensuring that students can navigate complex professional environments with confidence and competence. By engaging with this process, students will not only refine their academic capabilities but also build a foundation for lifelong learning and career advancement in their respective fields.
There are three Parts that comprise the portfolio assessment:
Assessment Part 1: Coursework Plan
Submission Deadline: Date:16/01/2026, by 23:59hrs
Word Limit: Up to 500 words (approximately 1 A4 page)
Task: Choose one of your assignments from a credit-bearing module and describe how you approached its assessment. Your coursework plan should include:
- Understanding of the assessment requirements: Explain your interpretation of the learning outcomes and expectations.
- Approach to the assessment: Detail the process you followed to plan and complete the assessment.
- Development of information: Summarise how you researched, gathered, and utilised relevant data or resources for the assessment.
Assessment Part 2:
Reflection on Development
Submission Deadline: Date: 16/01/2026, by 23:59 hrs.
Word Limit: Up to 500 words (approximately 1 A4 page) + appendix (2 SWOT Analysis)
Task:
Reflect on your academic and professional development throughout your MBA/MSc journey. Your reflection should cover:
- Personal development: Highlight key improvements and learning
- Based on the changes in your SWOT analyses, comment briefly on how you have developed during your academic journey here at University of Greater Manchester. For example, you may have noted at the beginning of the semester that you lacked confidence in presenting and were not familiar with teamwork. Yet, at the end of the semester, you feel more confident presenting and enjoy teamwork. This might be because you have had an opportunity in your assignments to present and to work in at team; etc.
- SWOT Analysis:

- Include an initial SWOT analysis from the beginning of your academic journey (in the appendix).
- Include a second SWOT analysis from the end of Semester 1 or Semester 2 (in the appendix).
- Summarise the key changes between the two analyses and how they reflect your growth.
