Overview

Scholarly activities encompass events and situations that enable nursing students to learn, conduct research, and innovate various aspects of care, thereby meeting the needs of patients and the broader health population. Engagement in scholarly activities advances the nursing profession and practice. The scholarly activity I attended was an interdisciplinary training session on infection control, specifically designed for wound patients who require continuous dressing. The target audience for this activity comprised the multidisciplinary team in the facility and all healthcare providers who attend to patients, such as physicians, nurses, and therapists, among other practitioners (Ariyo & Olorunfemi, 2024). The activity offers numerous benefits in infection control, as infections are preventable events; the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) does not compensate facilities for their occurrence. Therefore, knowing different approaches to infection control and prevention is vital for providers to enhance patient safety, reduce the cost of care, and improve the quality of care offered to patients.

Problem

Infections are a critical patient safety and quality issue with adverse effects on patients, providers, and the facility. Therefore, this scholarly activity enhances understanding of the different types of infections, develops and integrates control measures like hand hygiene activities that include hand washing and the use of sanitizers. Currently, patients with wounds are susceptible to infections due to the nature of their wounds and the handling of their dressings. Wounds increase the risk of infections, making it essential for facilities to have sufficient knowledge and skills in prevention to protect both the facility and the affected patients.

The interdisciplinary training sessions enable nurses to explore various aspects and the essence of adopting a collaborative approach to reducing and preventing infections. The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics declarative statement implores nurses to develop competencies by leveraging interdisciplinary collaboration (Zajac et al., 2021). Teamwork will enhance a shared approach to infection control, including improving nurses’ competencies to manage patients from diverse backgrounds.

Solution 

Wound management is a delicate process, especially for patients in the critical burn unit who require close observation since they have open wounds susceptible to infection. Lack of knowledge and evidence-based practice (EBP) approaches to wound management hinder quality patient care interventions, including interventions to stop and prevent infections (Rocel &Williams, 2024). Therefore, the practical solution to controlling infections is a collaborative approach, which, through scholarly activity, enables nurses to integrate improved wound care and management. Teamwork implies that providers work through a shared perspective or goal to enhance care delivery and prevent adverse events, such as infections, which are costly and lead to poor patient experiences.

Opportunity

The scholarly activity provides an opportunity for providers to enhance their understanding of the significance of collaboration through interdisciplinary teams in managing wounds, particularly open wounds in critical burn settings. The activity offers a chance for all present to share knowledge, make critical observations, and enhance approaches by leveraging evidence-based practice interventions (Costar & Hall, 2021). The activity also demonstrates the significance of enhancing healthcare providers’ knowledge, abilities, and competencies to improve care delivery, particularly in infection control for patients with open wounds.
