The best example of unity between Dominicans and Haitians is offered by the War of Restoration (1863-1865)
1. The Dominican Republic was created in February 27, 1844 after the separation from Haiti.
2. The government of the new republic was corrupt and separated from the ideals of the “Trinitarios.”
3. Leaders such as Pedro Santana governed without taking into consideration the rural masses.
4. Santana was corrupt and bankrupted the country printing money without any back up.
5. Santana offered the country to Spain in order to solve the financial crisis (1861).
6. The newly created republic was no more and became a colony of Spain.
7. Santana’s move upset the patriots such as Francisco del Rosario Sanchez. Moreover, it upset the Dominican masses who saw the danger of the reinstallation of slavery. Puerto Rico and Cuba were Spanish colonies under slavery workforce.
8. Haiti, on the other hand, feared about its country with a colonial power ruling in the island.
9. The first to go to Haiti and seek help was the patriot Francisco del Rosario Sanchez. In Haiti he gathered ammunitions and came back to fight the Spanish. However, he was caught and executed in El Cercado a town next to the border.
10. On August 16, 1863 a group of patriots crossed the border with logistic aid from Haitian President Geffrard. They stopped in Capotillo, a town also near the border and raised the Dominican Flag and declared war to the Spanish.
11. Dominican and Haitian soldiers fought together until 1865 when they expelled Spain and restored the Dominican Republic. The War of Restoration was victorious.
