Your textbook discusses Earthworks (or Land Art) on pages 252-253, and again on pg. 549. (Note: there are a few names for this type of sculpture: Earthworks, Land Art, and Environmental Art can all be used somewhat interchangeably. I prefer Earthworks, as does the textbook.). After reading this material and watching the videos on Spiral Jetty and Andy Goldsworthy, please offer your thoughts on creating art from the land in this Discussion Board.
1. What is your response to creating art out of the land? Think about the examples in the book: The Great Serpent Mound (800 BCE-100 CE) and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970) demonstrate that artists have been making art from the land for centuries.
2.Share one example of an Earthwork/Land art not found in the book or PPT. Search the Internet (this week, I am giving you free reign to search anywhere, but pay close attention to the definition of Earthworks – see the note below
3.Embed your image in your post using the Add Content tool and tell us about the work. Remember to provide the artist’s name, title, and date of creation, along with any other information you think the class should know.
4If you prefer, you can create your own art out of the land — take inspiration from Andy Goldsworthy and go outside and create art from leaves, dirt, etc. Take a photograph of your work and share it with the class. Tell us about it and your experience making it.
5 As usual, your post should be at least 150 words.
6.Have fun with this post! This assignment is meant to get you to think more about this type of art that some of you may not be familiar with, but it is also meant to be more relaxed.
