Stylistically, Art Nouveau’s graphic design had its influences. It was influenced by the decorative aesthetic of the Arts & Crafts movement, by French Rococo design, by Celtic ornamentation, and mostly by Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, newly imported into Europe by the late 19thcentury. Many European and American designers borrowed the style of flatforms with bold outlines from those prints and used them in their new, modern designs. Can you think of a contemporary example of a style being borrowed from or heavily influenced by another culture? This could be any medium; graphic design, art, music, fashion, etc.
