Topic (Broad) 1:Culture Change and Gender Relations
The aim of this assignment is to investigate how various forms of culture change (e.g., social, economic, and political forces) can impact or alter gender relations in a given society.
You can also use the AnthroSource database entering the search term “gender relations AND culture change” and locate an article of interest to you regarding the impact of a change or shift in a given society and its impact (or reinforcement) of gender relations or gender ideology. Choose one or more articles that best fit your topic.
Some questions you may want to consider in the assignment:
What change occurred within this local society (e.g., colonization, economic development, access to the Internet, etc.)? How are the changes seen to impact society?
What were the traditional views and/or expectations of each gender? How did cultural changes impact these traditional views?
Have the cultural changes altered gender relations (e.g., has it lowered the status of women)?
Did the local society find a way to alter their traditional views of males and females to fit into the new social order (e.g., women are now in the public realm)?
It is expected that the assignment will contain some critical perspectives (not just a summary of the materials) and reflective commentaries, including your personal experience or observation about the topic chosen.The assignment should be of 5-6 pages (double-spaced) in length, excluding title page, figures, tables, and references or table of contents. It should be double spaced in a 12-point font (Times New Roman is preferred) and APA reference guide should correctly be used both in the body of the assignment and reference section.
