Success does not always have positive outcomes. Many leaders have “fallen from grace” in a very public way. The article lists a series of quotes around thoughts that arrogant leaders may have (p. 211). Reflect on a leader you have experienced that was not successful, then select three of the quotes and apply them to that leader. What leadership lesson can you learn from the failures of this leader, so that you will not repeat them in your leadership roles?
“We must learn to manage success” is stated in the article. Reflect on a leader you know and consider successful. Share a description of the leader and why you consider him/her successful. How did he/she “manage success”? Next, apply the traits they exhibited to your leadership goals. How will you “manage success” as a leader? Develop a plan, then include it in your response.
The authors shared a long list of once-successful leaders who are not perceived as successful anymore as well as a list of traits demonstrated by these leaders. It also common place to read about a leader failing almost daily in the media. Select three leaders from this list or currently in the media as “falling from grace”. Describe each leader:
At the pinacol of their success
Cause for their “demise” as a leader
Identify traits this leader demonstrated
Next, compare and contrast the three leaders. What leadership lessons could you apply to your future leadership plans?
