Hello, welcome to the health policy podcast.

Today, I am going to talk about telehealth care

Have you ever felt so tired and burdened by the problems of life that you lose concentration, start feeling down, and sometimes find yourself irritated by almost everything, but don’t have enough time to get help or are unable to access the health services due to being in a remote location outside a large city?

Now, the majority of health organizations in the United States provide telehealth services for mental health care. Telehealth is the use of electronic communication technologies to provide remote healthcare services that connect patients with healthcare providers at any time and from anywhere.

In recent years, telehealth has become increasingly popular in mental health care, with many mental health professionals now offering online therapy and counseling services to their clients.

The advantages of telehealth are safety, confidentiality, and flexibility.

In terms of safety,  telehealth provides more privacy for those who may feel uncomfortable attending in-person sessions. Also, patient information should be stored securely and only accessible to authorized individuals.

Confidentiality and security are important considerations when using telehealth. Telehealth platforms must comply with privacy laws, such as HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, in the United States. The flexibility allows individuals who live in rural or remote areas, or have mobility issues or transportation difficulties to access mental health care services. In recent studies, researchers found that telepsychiatry is as effective as in-person psychiatry for treating depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder and that teletherapy is associated with high patient satisfaction rates.

The federal government has reduced restrictions on telehealth in the Medicare program, including allowing participants from any location to access services from their homes.

Also, the (health and human services )HHS has waived enforcement of HIPAA for telemedicine, while the (drug enforcement agency  DEA has reduced requirements for e-prescriptions of controlled substances.

Moreover, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act includes additional funding to the Telehealth Network Grant Program. This program currently awards funds for telehealth technologies used in rural areas and those without medical services.

On a state level, California law defines telehealth as “the mode of delivering health care services and public health via information and communication technologies to facilitate the diagnosis, consultation, treatment, and self-management of a patient’s health care.

The California Telehealth Resource Center is dedicated to helping providers implement and sustain telehealth programs.  Services include needs assessment, equipment selection, presenter training, operational workflow, contracting with specialists, qualifications and staff roles. Furthermore, the Center for Connected Health Policy works closely with all telehealth resource centers in the United States and provides technical assistance to state agencies and lawmakers on telehealth policy. As a result, anyone who feels need help to deal with daily challenges can now take advantage of the telehealth services for mental health care that are increasingly more available.

Thank you for listening to this telehealth podcast.
