Address issues of class, race, gender, and age, among other things. How has your gender (woman) and ideas about gender influenced who you are and how you think about yourself? How does race (white) affect you and position you in this world? For example, how has your class (middle class) background influenced your identity? “When, where, and under what conditions?” as Adrienne Rich asks. In many ways, Rich’s essay offers you a model to follow and draw upon as you construct your own statement.
Do not overthink this.
TIPS
Do give your essay a clear, logical organization.
Do be as specific as possible. This is a (relatively) short paper. You cannot give your entire biography.
Do remember, this is your first paper. It is not going to be perfect. That is why we are here.
DO NOT Disregard the assignment requirements, use sweeping universalisms (ex. “Like all women, I) or bring in scathing indictments.
