Choose a topic from this semester and write a paper at least four pages long arguing an original thesis. You may argue a thesis specific to one text or you may compare multiple texts but it is in your best interest to keep your thesis as specific as possible. Your thesis should be backed up by a specific discussion of evidence pulled from the text(s). In other words, the skills necessary for a close reading paper should be applied to analyzing multiple passages and/or lines in order to argue a thesis that reaches across them. How are they similar? How are they different? Most importantly, how are those differences important? For a close-reading paper, I would have asked you to think about each detail of your passage, figure out how they all work together, and write a cohesive argument that works through each aspect of the passage. You are essentially doing the same thing now only you are looking for how multiple details—coming from throughout a text (or texts)—interact to make a larger statement.
