Discussion Week 5–Cicero and Quintilian

Cicero and Quintilian both argue that the ideal Roman orator should represent the unity of wisdom and eloquence.  What do they mean by this?  What does a wise person need to know?  How do they suggest that one becomes “wise” and “eloquent”?  What role does the Hellenistic system of rhtorical education play in the education of a wise and eloquent orator?

Remember, you can discuss this question or anything else that interests you about the readings.  This is meant to generate discussion, not as a question for you to answer.  Remember, the purpose of the discussion posts is to show that you have engaged the readings and the responses of your colleagues.

Discussion posts should be your original ideas that identify important concepts from the assigned course readings.  Remember that you should should relate your comments to specific ideas or concepts raised in the readings.  Discussion posts that talk about Cicero in general terms, or that talk only about a different work by Cicero, or that don’t address something from course readings are unacceptable and will not receive credit. Posts that are copied, in whole or in part, from another source are plagiarized, and will be treated as academic dishonesty.

You shouldn’t quote or paraphrase extensively, except to point out what aspect of the readings you are commenting on.  Material quoted from the readings should total no more than 10% of a discussion post and should include an accurate reference to the source (author and page number).
