For the second formal writing assignment of the semester, we will create “Compare & Contrast” essays. These are meant to be exercises in close-reading and analysis. A clearly stated claim or argument (ex. “thesis statement”) should appear in the first paragraph, and the subsequent paragraphs should offer textual evidence that thoughtfully and persuasively supports this claim. The purpose of the assignment is to practice making coherent, well-organized arguments and to share—with your reader—some illuminating insights about the texts.
These essays should be 4-6 pages, typed, with an original title and a Works Cited page listing the two course texts along with any additional sources (not required) that you might wish to incorporate.
