I am a Chinese student who currently study in New York and I am a boy. My parents are very traditional and they could not understand me somtimes. I am actually a homosexual. However, Chinese people could not accept it as western countries.
You could make up the story as you want.
For example, I watched certain movie or I have phsycial contact with boys and I found out that I am gay. My inner struggle and fear to talk to my parents. Misunderstanding from friends.
Then you could write that I face my true identity after I move to New York and finally admit to my parents the truth.
They were upset but finally accept me.
Be creative however, it should sound real
