In his book, The China Model, Daniel Bell makes the case that, in China, meritocracy is a more suitable form of government than democracy. What does ‘meritocracy’ mean here, and how it is related to Chinese history and traditional thought?  How would you assess Bell’s claim – do you agree with him? Partially? Why or why not?
