In the unit on romantic relationships, we discussed the model of relational development proposed by Mark Knapp. This model delineates 10 stages in the progression and deterioration of a relationship: 5 stages in a progression labeled coming together (initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating, & bonding) and 5 stages of deterioration (differentiating, circumscribing, stagnating, avoiding, and terminating) labeled coming apart. In this option I’d like you to apply a portion of this model this model to a significant romantic relationship in which you are/were a participant. Choose EITHER the coming together or coming apart segment of the model and examine each of the 5 stages in your chosen half of the model in light of your experiences in the relationship. For each stage, briefly explain the stage in your words and provide examples of how the processes in the stage occurred or are occurring in the context of your relationship.
You are welcome to change the names of anyone involved but you should use actual experiences when constructing your discussion. You are also welcome to state that you don’t feel a particular stage applied to your relationship, however if you do so, you must provide a detailed, compelling argument as to why.
