Christia’s model is based on the assumption that alliances in civil wars are instrumental — actors enter into them based on power calculations in order to gain a minimum winning coalition and increase their maximum bargaining power in the post-war state.  Similar to the limitations of Gade et al’s model, are there certain conflicts that this model works better for than others?  Is it premised on each actor having relatively similar strengths?
