Research Design

Researchers recruit a convenience sample of women in the waiting room of a large urban obstetrics practice
and ask them to recall their exercise patterns, defined as days per week with more than 30 minutes of
moderate to intense physical activity, in the six months before they became aware that they were pregnant.
They compare these data with each participant’s Hemoglobin A1c (a marker for diabetes) on the day of the
visit at which she was recruited.
Level 1 Question – Is this study quantitative, qualitative, or mixed?
Level 2 Question – How is a convenience sample different from a random sample, and what effect does this
have on the strength of its findings?
Level 3 Question – What additional variable(s) would we want to know about before interpreting this study’s
findings?
