Restrictions/Constraints
Restrictions or constraints can take a variety of forms, and generally have an effect on the recommended course of action. In the first instance they could refer to specific details of the case that are not provided which, if known, could have an impact on the recommended course of action – in this manner, they replace the need to identify “assumptions” in a one-off manner. Although in this context, the restrictions and constraints could certainly be construed as assumptions, they are positioned in such a way as to be explained directly in alignment with the recommended course of action – an approach far more compelling. There are other restraints and conditions that could arrive that are not assumptions, but rather realities of the case study. For example, the impact of a period of high inflation may constrain a government’s ability to implement a particular policy; a period of rising interest rates may constrain a corporation’s ability to borrow.
