Reutzel and Cooter (2018) stated that “Comprehension is the very heart and soul of reading” (p. 251). I remember as a young student hearing that “Reading is the key to education.” Do you agree or disagree with these statements? Why or why not? How do YOU assess your students’ use of comprehension strategies? Finally, when you encounter a student who is simply a good “word caller” and obviously lacks comprehension strategies, describe the first three steps you would take to help that student.
