This paper should be seven pages minimum and will require that you include at least two secondary sources, in addition to your primary material. In other words, you will need to do some research for the paper. However, your research should enhance your own argument about the work or works of literature that you will be analyzing. Start with your own working thesis and ideas and use the material to support your ideas. Papers in which students do extensive research and then try to create forced arguments to fit the research are not very successful. You will need to use MLA citation format: proper parenthetical citation and a works cited page.
a. Discuss a literary work in relation to its historical context. For instance, how might Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” be a critique of Victorian marriage norms or gender roles? What does the speaker reveal about himself that adds to this critique? How does Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott” reveal certain Victorian attitudes about women? You might consider how the work depicts the repression of female sexuality
