You are a young professional counselor for LGBT issues at Williamsburg NY community mental health center.
Brad and Dana are Dannie’s parents, a 5 years old girl who prefers wearing boy clothes, climbs trees and plays rugby.
She seems happy most of the time, especially when allowed to engage in her favorite activities, but when her parents encourage her to invite other girls for a playdate or when asked to participate in a “girls only” gathering, she becomes sad and asks to cancel the playdate. Her parents are worried that she might be a transgender boy.
As young professionals, what are two possible and different plausible explanations for Danny’s situation? What would you advise the parents for the near future? What are possible outcomes for Dannie’s future?
