Module 2 Definitions of Religion

What does religion mean to you? How would you define it? What’s necessary for something to be a ‘religion’?

Module 3 Abrahamic Exclusivity

In the modern, pluralistic world, do you think exclusivity is a necessary trait of the Abrahamic religions? What examples can you think of where this might be breaking down – where Jews, Christians, and Muslims are accepting and perhaps incorporating other ways of being religious?

For this topic, avoid discussing how others view exclusivity. Focus on how the religion itself views exclusivity.

Module 4 In the Beginning (view the bible passages at biblegateway.com)

Read the first two chapters of the Book of Genesis, linked within the course module and available online. What are your thoughts on the differences between the creation story in chapter one compared to the creation story in chapter two? (Be sure to read them since the Genesis creation story is frequently misquoted in popular culture).

Module 5 Influences of Judaism

There are only approximately 14 million Jews worldwide today; yet despite a population that’s only a small fraction of the other major world religions, Judaism has had an enormous influence on human history and civilization. In what specific ways has this been so?

Module 6 Reflections on Reincarnation

Does the idea of reincarnation strike you as a good thing or a bad thing? Why? What might be some of the implications for what you do with this life, if it’s just one amongst countless others?

Module 7 Brahman and Atman

From the passage linked in the course module, read the first and second khandas of the sixth prapathanka for context, then scroll down and read khandas 9-13. How might one interpret this passage? What does it say about the nature of the universe, and the relationship of individuals to it?

Module 8 Buddhism

How might the core Buddhist idea that suffering is a result of attachment, and craving for attachments, be understood and applied in the modern, Western world?

Module 9 Yin Yang

Examine the taijitu (yin-yang) symbol carefully. What do you think each part represents? How would you interpret these symbols as not only a life philosophy, but possibly an explanation of the nature of the cosmos?

Module 10 Daodejing

Read a selection of sections from the Daodejing linked in the course module. The Daodejing is notoriously difficult to unravel, yet it is the core of Daoist philosophy, and has enjoyed enormous popularity for centuries. What key principles can you identify in these sections? Make clear reference to specific lines. How might we apply these principles to our lives?
